HOUSE OF HORRORS – AUGUST 7 9PM – THE MONSTER SQUAD

July 18th, 2010  / Author: Oshkosh Horror

The end of the world starts at midnight…not if The Monster Squad has any say in the matter. Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, the Mummy and Gill Man descend on a tiny town in search of a diabolically powerful amulet. But only 12-year-old Sean and his gang of monster-obsessed misfits can save the day…unless Scary German Guy gets to them first. And if they can find a version. No, that’s virgin. Hopefully they will have better luck than Van Helsing, that idiot blew it. Okay, okay, okay, enough with the movie references.

One could think of The Monster Squad as if the Universal Monsters invaded The Goonies, but regardless of how you want to describe it, one thing holds true: this is one fun movie. Perhaps you saw it when you were younger, not too long ago or never. There’s no better time to (re)discover The Monster Squad then with the House of Horrors gang so mark your calendars!

As always, the movie is free and open to the public. Bring your friends!

Bits and Pieces: An Interview with Erich Claude Polnow

July 12th, 2010  / Author: Oshkosh Horror

Here’s a little something new we are going to be featuring on Oshkosh Horror…interviews! Bits and Pieces will feature interviews with all sorts of individuals from the horror community. For the first entry in Bits and Pieces, John ventures out of Oshkosh to the foot of the lake, Fond Du Lac. Wait, Fond Du Lac means “foot of the lake” so why the hell did I say that? Moron. Anyway, Oshkosh Horror spat some questions to a man who could be labeled an artistic Jack of All Trades, Mr. Erich Claude Polnow.

OH: Portraits, pez, life size figures, etc? What’s the deal?

ECP: As soon as I could hold a drawing tool, I was using it. I used to do only pen and ink. Then, a buddy came over in ‘05 with some pastels and told me to draw something. I reluctantly obliged and decided on Dr. Tongue. It hit me like a fever. I fell in love with color and worked on tweaking my technique over the years to what it is now. Mixed medium awesome. The content allowed me to work on advancing my skill on monsters, likeness, shading, and all of that. And it was fun to do characters I love.
The Pez? Kind of the same thing. I also had been making action figures for about 10 years or so. And when making figures of George Carlin or Jules and Vincent–heads are usually the most difficult part of the piece for the same reasons as the portraits. So, I started making Pez dispensers to hone my skill of sculpting and be able to walk away with a finished piece. Plus, not many people do Pez or 3-D sculpting these days, so it’s been fun to have a rare calling card like that.

When did your artwork start to take a direction to horror?

I think it (horror) always had an influence on me. I can remember being in kindergarten and doing the thing where you’d draw a picture of yourself in your Halloween costume and write a wide-spaced page about it. I drew myself as Jason Voorhees with a bloody machete and hockey mask. Ahh, the eighties– a time before they had meetings about what kids would draw.

What events/people have inspired you throughout your adventures?

House of Horrors – July 10 9PM – Jaws

July 5th, 2010  / Author: Oshkosh Horror

We had a terrific turnout for our Three Year Anniversary last month, hell, we almost ran out of seats! It’s so great to see horror fans of all ages, sizes and types get together and celebrate our beloved genre.

This month’s movie probably doesn’t even need a description. One word says it all: Jaws. That’s right, the one and only, Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water…

For a little extra fun come just to see John squirm and freak out to the movie that still traumatizes him to this day. As always, the movie is free and open to the public. Bring your friends!

Friday Fright Night presents Plan 9 From Outer Space – This Friday, July 9 8PM

July 5th, 2010  / Author: Oshkosh Horror

Our last Friday Fright Night feature, House on Haunted Hill, was an absolute blast! Thanks so much to everyone who came out to see Emergo in all it’s glory. Following up that evening will be tough, but if any film can do it, it’s Plan 9 From Outer Space! After the embarrassing failure of the first eight plans, a group of evil aliens enacts plan nine — resurrecting the dead to take over the Earth. Bela Lugosi makes his final film appearance — along with Vampira, Tor Johnson, Criswell and a chiropractor acquaintance of director Ed Wood. This film has been labeled one of worst films since it were released in 1958 and while that is up for debate, one thing is for certain, Plan 9 must be seen to believe it. Be sure to check out Plan 9 From Outer Space this Friday @ 8pm at The Time Community Theater (445 N. Main St. Downtown Oshkosh)! How can you pass it up; free movie, cheap snacks and good company. Check out the trailer below and also the poster for the full line-up.

FRIDAY FRIGHT NIGHT THIS FRIDAY: HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL – SHOWN IN EMERGO – 8PM

June 21st, 2010  / Author: Oshkosh Horror

Dear, dear friends & visitors!
We’re ever so excited to bring you HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL this FRIDAY as the latest installment of our Friday Fright Night series.

No, we are not showing the film from 1999, we are showing the good ole’ 1959 original House on Haunted Hill. Our second Vincent Price flick (can you blame us, I mean it’s Vincent Price!!!) features the legend as millionaire Frederick Loren, who offers five people $10,000 to stay a night in a remote haunted house, giving each of them a loaded gun as a “party favor.” Throughout the night, they’re terrorized by skeletons, disembodied heads and other grisly apparitions. Will any of the guests survive to win the prize? Or will the house scare them to death?

This night is going to bring something a little special. When House on Haunted Hill was originally released in 1959 it was released in a new technique called “Emergo”, which meant part of the film actually came out of the screen into the audience. Director William Castle was known for his fun and exciting gimmicks with his films, something a well-known director decided to imitate (cough, cough, Hictchcock!). Sure, it’s 41 years later but “Emergo” lives on. We at Friday Fright Night will be presenting House on Haunted Hill in “Emergo”. For some of us this might be a once in a lifetime event so this is something you don’t want to miss. The night is still going to be terrific so venture down to The Time next Friday @ 8pm. How can you pass it up; free movie, cheap snacks and good company. Bring your friends and check out the trailer below.

Here is the one of the original trailers, we’re looking forward to seeing you there!!
