Sadly, it’s that time of year where House of Horrors scales back from two features a night down to one. It’s not because we don’t love you, we do. The fun isn’t ending one bit, we are still going to bring you nights of free horror and so much more. Don’t you worry, friends, we are here for you. To prove it, this month we are going to dive deep into the (strange and twisted) mind of Mr. Clive Barker, with his 1990 feature, Nightbreed.
Based off his novella, Cabal, Nightbreed tells the story of a community of mutant outcasts of varying types and abilities attempts to escape the attentions of a psychotic serial killer and redneck vigilantes with the help of a brooding young man who discovers them. Nightbreed is definitely like no other movie we’ve watched at House of Horrors, and features some amazing looking monsters plus director David Cronenberg stepping in front of the camera to play the demented Dr. Philip K. Decker.

Friday Fright Night, the bi-weekly celebration of 1950′s and 60′s B-movies, debuted in April 2010 at the Time Community Theater, and with the help of so many outstanding attendees became a huge success! Through the 14 weeks of films, we were able to raise over $3,000 for the Time and not only that, but met a lot of great people and had a blast with the “classics” of yesteryear. With Friday Fright Night being such a success, we’d be crazy not to bring it back, right? Well, we are excited to announce the return of the one, the only… Fright Fright Night!
The 2011 season will be kicking off at 8PM on Friday, April 1 (no joke) with The Terror, directed by Roger Corman and starting Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson and Dick Miller. Friday Fright Night will be taking over the Time Community Theater once again, located at 445 N. Main St. in Downtown Oshkosh. And the best part is that ALL the movies are still FREE!!! We have tons of free stuff planned this year so be sure to mark your calendars!
When March rolls around, we know that spring is on it’s way. The winter months get long with all the snow and cold, so the change in the weather is welcomed. Aside from temperatures warming up and the snow start to disappear, the weather can also be a little foggy, a little misty and… Wait a minute! Foggy? Misty? That sounds like a great idea for March’s House of Horrors!
Starting out the night will be John Carpenter’s The Fog,which marks the fourth Carpenter film shown at House of Horrors, but considering his catalog, can you blame us? The Centenary of the small sea town, Antonio Bay, is approaching. While the townsfolk prepare to celebrate, the victims of the crime that founded the town rise from the sea to claim retribution. Under cover of the fog, they carry out their vicious attacks, searching for what is rightly theirs. Featuring a great cast of Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Halbrook, The Fog is a terrific telling of a classic ghost story.
Starting his film career as a co-writer of A Nightmare on Elm St. 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob and The Fly II, Frank Darabont finally directed his first horror feature in 2007 with The Mist, based on the novel by Stephen King. After a violent storm attacks a town in Maine, an approaching cloud of mist appears the next morning. As the mist quickly envelops the area, a group of people get trapped in a local grocery store. The people soon discover that within the mist lives numerous species of horrific, unworldly creatures. As the world around them manifests into a literal hell-on-earth, the horrified citizens try desperately to survive this apocalyptic disaster. We will be showing The Mist in black and white, the way Darabont wanted to release the film but the studios said otherwise.

There comes a time in everyone’s, well, maybe most people’s lives, when they stop and wonder, “What would The Exorcist be like if it were told in 60 seconds? Oh, and in clay as well.” Wait no more, friends, and find out for yourself!
Sure, Drive Angry doesn’t fall into the horror category, however, by the looks of it, this is offering enough mayhem to satisfy gorehounds of all types (and Tom Atkins is in it!). Plus, we have 10 passes for a free advanced screening in Milwaukee on Thursday, February 24 that we want to give away… got your attention now?
Actually, we have more than 10, we have 20 passes, but we are going to give 10 out in this contest and the other 10 will be given out next week through a different contest. Oh, each pass is good for two admissions, so the lucky winners can bring their significant others, friends, brothers, sisters, parents… hell, you can bring anyone you want! Enough with the rambling, onto the contest!
We want you to email us one of your craziest driving stories. In 200 words or less, tell us any ridiculous driving story you want. Share a story that’s real, or make one up, it doesn’t matter. Just make it as good as you possibly can.
All submissions must be received by 11:59pm on Wednesday, February 16. Only one submission per contestant (you can participate in next weeks contest, though), and the story MUST be 200 words or less. Any entries over 200 words will automatically disqualified (yes, we will be checking the word counts). Contestants must be 17 or older. We will be selecting the 10 winners so entertain us! This Saturday Apple Blossom Books is hosting their first Undead Valentine’s Bash. The evening will consist of undead author Emily Luebke signing her latest book, Phoenix, as well as plenty of “gross” food, trivia and even some horror flicks in the background. House of Horrors is all about getting people together to celebrate our love for the horror genre. Over the past three and a half years, we’ve seen so much of what the horror genre has to offer. Part of the fun at House of Horrors is not only viewing the movies we all love, but showing a title or two that perhaps you haven’t seen. This month we are focusing on two titles, we feel, might be under the radar and/or overlooked. Plus,… this is our first haunted house double feature!
Starting out the night will be The Changeling (not the Angelina Jolie flick directed by Clint Eastwood), starring George C. Scott as composer John Russell, who loses his wife and daughter in a car wreck, and seeks solace by renting a secluded estate outside Seattle. But the mansion is haunted by the presence of a child who died there more than 80 years ago. Now, Russell must find out who that child was — and why there seems to be a cover-up about his existence.
Following The Changeling will be The Legend of Hell House, based on the novel by Richard Matheson. A team of four paranormal investigators accepts an invitation for a week’s stay in a mansion rumored to be haunted. Depending on their viewpoints, the group members either intend to prove the presence of ghosts or are determined to debunk the myths. Previous guests of Hell House are known to have gone mad… Will this group survive the week?
On top of the movies, we will be hosting another round of horror movie trivia, so start studying for your chance to win all sorts of goodies!

Straight from Kitley’s Krypt is this month’s Kryptic Army Mission:
On February 5th, 1906, a great actor was born: John Carradine. This great thespian lived to act. It was his life. In his long career, he had claimed to have appeared in more movies than any other actor. I’m sure if you include his TV appearances, it might just be true. IMDB lists 340 titles alone. Are all of them great films? Not even close. Carradine’s lived a trouble life, filled with mishaps, several divorces, court battles, arrests, custody battles, and of course, alcohol. But that didn’t stop him from doing what he was born to do….Act!
From the early days when he would stalk the streets of Hollywood spouting full acts of Shakespeare to the people passing by or to the waiting cab drivers, to sketching portraits of people for a couple dollars to make ends meet, to when he finally made a name on the stage, and eventually in movies, it was the passion of acting that kept him going. In a lot of these roles, he seemed to specialize in the darker, more villainous ones.
While continually trying to stay working, to support his ever growing family, he was usually taking pretty much anything that was offered to him. And no matter what the picture, Carradine always gave it his all. Though, as rumors go, he turned down the role of Frankenstein’s creature because of the lack of any dialog. He would appear in some very low budget pictures throughout his career, but he kept working. It seems the more low budgeted film he did; the more he would be offered the same. But since he always needed the money, and he wanted to work, he would take those roles. At times, he would be a little bitter, thinking of the old days. But he continued to work.
Since Carradine has appeared in so many films, we at first thought that this mission might be a little too easy to find something that you haven’t seen before. But the more we thought about it, we really wanted to take the time this month to honor this actor. Because even though today is pretty much thought of a ham actor because he played in lot of cheesy movies (he even had HAM on his license plates at one point), he still was an incredible talent, in whatever role he was in. So we wanted to give people have another opportunity to discover or re-discover this talent. Sure, the movies you pick might not be the greatest quality, but remember to watch this exceptional actor give it his all, no matter what the budget was.

Witness the birth of Oshkosh Horror Assignments! Going off a great suggestion that was made, we will be posting regular “assignments” on the forum. These “assignments” are not so much assignments as they are ways to get the conversations going, and keep them going. There will be no rewards given, and like wise, no consequences for not participating. These topics will not have a deadline, however, a time frame will be suggested.
So please, feel free to chime in with any and all thoughts, but remember: respect everyone’s opinions! Agree, disagree, discuss, debate and everything in between but do it in a non-insulting, friendly way.

Living in the Midwest during the winter, depending how you look at it, can be great or it can be hell. The joys of a Midwestern winter brings both the cold, and the snow. Yesterday produced a decent amount of snow (in the Fox Valley, at least) so let’s start the Oshkosh Horror Assignments with a winter/snow theme.
The goal: In the next week or so, watch a horror movie that predominately features winter/snow. How you interrupt that is completely up to you.

Now, if I can make a suggestion: The wonderful thing about being horror fans like ourselves is that there are so many great titles we love and could watch over and over. We all do it, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, we always suggest trying out new movies, break your comfort zones. For example, while The Thing is absolutely unbelievable (one of my personal favorites, don’t get me wrong), we’ve all (hopefully) seen it so check out something different this time around. Or don’t, do whatever best serves you, but whatever you do, talk about it here!
