It’s time to finish the holy trinity, friends! Okay, maybe “holy trinity” isn’t how most people refer to Peter Jackson’s horror films, but we sure do! We’ve shown Bad Taste, we’ve shown Dead Alive, now, it’s time for The Frighteners!
Michael J. Fox (yes, THAT Michael J. Fox) plays shady psychic detective Frank Bannister, who uses his ability to communicate with the dead to boost his business. But when a sinister spirit is unleashed and members of the community are mysteriously killed, the P.I. — with the help of a comely widow — must use his powers to get to the bottom of the supernatural slayings. Oh, and let’s not forget to mention Jeffrey Combs as the villain!
It’s Peter Jackson, so you know it’s going to get ridiculous in the best possible way. Be sure to check out the trailer below, and mark your calendars. As always, House of Horrors is free and open to the public, so bring your friends!
We’re getting this posted a little last minute… Sorry, folks!
John Carpenter. Saying that name alone should get any horror fans attention. Carpenter doing a Lovecraftian film… Well, that should definitely get your attention know. We don’t exactly like to play favorites at House of Horrors, but seeing that we are about to show our fifth Carpenter film, In The Mouth of Madness, you probably have an idea that we are a fan.
When popular horror writer Sutter Cane goes missing, his publisher hires investigator John Trent to find him. Trent tracks Cane to a small New England town, which is filled with nightmare scenes right out of the author’s books. Encountering one gruesome scene after another, Trent wonders if Cane’s fans have gone psychotic and begun imitating his writings, or his “novels” are really nonfiction.

We’ve shown a few films based off of Stephen King novels, but never have we dedicated an entire night to the “King of Horror”. Well, that is, not until now. For March, we present you with two Stephen King films form the 80′s, Pet Sematary and Silver Bullet.
Gary Busey and Cory Haim in a wheelchair walk into a bar… Stop me if you heard this one. To start things off, we have Silver Bullet, based on the novella, Cycle of the Werewolf. A sleepy American town is terrorized by extreme sadistic murders. After investigating, the townspeople conclude that the killer’s a werewolf. While all the town’s inhabitants prepare to lock themselves up at night, Marty Coslaw, a 13-year-old, wheelchair-bound boy, is the only person brave enough to try to track down the mysterious beast.
Closing out the night will be Pet Sematary, based on the name of the same name. Dr. Louis Creed’s family moves into the country house of their dreams and discover a pet cemetery at the back of their property. The cursed burial ground deep in the woods brings the dead back to life — with “minor” problems. At first, only the family’s cat makes the return trip, but an accident forces a heartbroken father to contemplate the unthinkable. Everyone together now, “I don’t want to be buried…”

Slimy, gooey, campy, and very bloody. If these words describe the horror you like, then this month’s House of Horrors will be up your alley. Things are getting a little creepy and crawly with two lesser known titles, but don’t be mistaken. Just because they aren’t as well known as other titles, Slugs and Ticks offer plenty of fun!
A few years back, we screened the slasher romp, Pieces, which went over incredibly well. This month we are pleased to have Pieces director J.P. Simon return with another gore fest, Slugs. Something wicked is afoot in a small New York town, where the locals are being devoured by common garden slugs, and health inspector Mike Brady has an inkling as to why. As it turns out, toxic waste isn’t only bad for the environment … it’s absolutely deadly for people.
We’ll be stepping out of the sewers and into the woods for our next film, Ticks. Problem teens in Los Angeles join an inner-city wilderness project in and attempt to get back in touch with life’s priorities, led by do-gooders Holly and Charles. When they get to the campsite, they begin having problems adjusting to the wild life, particularly local marijuana growers using herbal steroids to accelerate plant growth, and the mutated ticks that the leaky steroid system has created. Starring a super young Seth Green, genre fav Clint Howard and Alfonso Ribeiro (aka Carlton from Fresh Price of Bel-Air)!

Winters in Wisconsin can be exhausting. Sometimes the snow and cold feel like they’re never going to leave. So, we thought for this month at House of Horrors it would be good to escape the clutches of snow and cold with films that deal with snow and cold… Hey, wait a minute! That doesn’t make sense. Okay, scratch that. This month at House of Horrors we will embrace the snow and cold with a snowy double feature!
If you like your horror to be packed with over-the-top gore, film references, and hot sex in a cold outhouse, look no further than the Norwegian splatterfest, Dead Snow. A group of Norwegian friends get the scariest history lesson of their lives during a weekend getaway to the snowy town of Øksfjord, where the party is interrupted by throngs of undead Nazi soldiers who once occupied the area. Armed with a machine-gun-equipped snowmobile, the gang fights for survival. And yes, we will be watching Dead Snow with subtitles. No dubbing ever!!!
Following up Dead Snow will be a film with a completely different tone, but it’s always good to shake things up a bit. Since House of Horrors takes place in a comic book shop, seems appropriate to show a film based on a comic book, right? If you like your vampires to actually be threatening, not all sparkly and shit, look no further than 30 Days of Night. When a monthlong period of darkness sets in on the tiny Alaskan town of Barrow, the locals are visited by a flock of bloodthirsty vampires who are eager to take advantage of the no-sun zone, prompting the town sheriff to act fast to save the day. WETA provides the special effects work, so you know it’s going to be top-notch.
Make no mistake about it, the snow is going to be bloody this month. Be sure to check out the trailers below, and mark your calendars. As always, House of Horrors is free and open to the public, so bring your friends!
This month’s House of Horrors might go down as one of the most bizarre. Not just because we are showing The Exorcist III and Session 9 (some might say both are under-rated and overlooked), but especially that we are pairing them together. Things are about to get a little creepy at House of Horrors.
Starting out the night will be the independent film from 2001, Session 9. Desperate for cash, asbestos remover Gordon claims he can clean up an abandoned psychiatric hospital in a week. But by the time Gordon discovers the truth about the asylum’s gruesome past, the place may cast its curse on his entire crew. The former site of untold human misery, the decaying mental ward now works its dark magic on each member of Gordon’s team.
Now, let us point out we are well aware of the fact that we are showing The Exorcist III without having shown The Exorcist at House of Horrors. Sure, this might seem a little odd, but we like to keep things interesting. Hopefully everyone has seen The Exorcist, and are familiar with it. If you didn’t see Exorcist II: The Heretic, good for you. Ignoring the events of The Heretic, William Peter Blatty (author of The Exorcist novel) writes and directs The Exorcist III, based on his book, Legion, which takes place 15 years after the first film. Lt. Kinderman and Father Dyer cheer each other up on the anniversary of the death of their mutual friend, Father Damien Karras, by going to see “It’s a Wonderful Life” at the local theater in Georgetown, near Washington D.C. But there’s no cheering Kinderman while a particularly cruel and gruesome serial killer is at large. His murders, which involve torture, decapitation and the desecration of religious icons, is bad enough; but they also resemble those of the Gemini Killer, who has been dead for fifteen years.
Both films this month are what you could call “slow burns”, but will still get under your skin. Be sure to check out the trailers below, and mark your calendars. As always, House of Horrors is free and open to the public, so bring your friends!
Everyone loves a good Halloween party, right? That’s why House of Horrors is throwing our own special kind of Halloween party: an double feature of movies centered around Halloween parties going wrong.
Starting out the night will be Murder Party. A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity. A solid independent film that won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival, Murder Party can certainly be described as a horror-comedy, leaning more towards the comedy side. However, there is enough bloodshed and references to keep any horror fan pleased.
Closing out the night will be Night of the Demons. On the night of Halloween, 10 teens decide to go to a party at an abandoned funeral parlor. “Hull House”, rumored to be built on an evil patch of land & underground stream, is the place. While starting the party, the teens gather around a big mirror to perform a seance…BIG MISTAKE. They awaken some evil force and find themselves trapped and taken over one by one. Now it’s a battle for who can survive before going to hell. Scream Queen Linnea Quigley co-stars in this over-the-top, gore filled movie packed with fun. After seeing Night of the Demons, you may never look at lipstick the same again.
Aside from the movies, we’ll be showing trailers for upcoming movies, and other Halloween-related videos. Who knows what else we will have in store, guess there’s only one way to find out.

Before he made A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, horror fans knew David Cronenberg because of Videodrome, Shivers, The Brood, The Fly… and especially, Scanners. Cronenberg’s approach to horror was one of a kind; provocative, demented, typically bordering sci-fi, always psychological, and usually with a splash of sexuality, as well. Make no mistake, you can always tell when you are watching a Cronenberg horror film.
Scanners came out in 1981, featuring the amazing Michael Ironside as Darryl Revok. Shunned for their unparalleled psychic powers, a faction of rogue “scanners” schemes to take over the world — and the only thing standing in their way is a young telepath reluctantly thrust into the fray. There are many reasons you should see Scanners, however, one in particular stands out: the best head explosion ever caught on film. Oh, and Michael Ironside. Did we mention him?

Last month, we gave you three movies to pick from for August’s House of Horrors. Much to our surprise, Waxwork won. It was a close race between the three, Scanners and Near Dark being the other choices. Then, completely unplanned, Scott called for a double feature, throwing Fright Night on with Waxwork. So, that means we are going to have twice the amount of fun at this month’s House of Horrors!
Ever wonder what it would be like to have zombies, werewolves, vampires and all sorts of other crazy stuff in one movie? Well, if you answered yes, you are in luck. Waxwork is truly unlike any other film you’ve seen. Invited over by a mysterious magician, Mark and his college friends attend a private tour of a macabre wax statue museum near campus, where the exhibits suck them into the frightening worlds of dangerous werewolves, vampires and other monsters. Full of satisfying suspense and gore, this inventive horror film finds Mark teaming up with unlikely allies in order to shut the waxwork down and escape with his life. Zach Galligan, of Gremlins fame (among other titles) stars with the awesome David Warner, of The Omen fame (among other titles). Hell, even John Rhys-Davies makes an appearance.
Now, let’s call attention to the fact that on Friday, August 19th, the Fright Night remake comes out in theaters. Sure, you could go see that, or better yet, you could come to House of Horrors the next night and see the original from 1985 (that is 100% Colin Farrel free). Charlie Brewster believes that his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge is a vampire. His belief is strengthened when mysterious deaths of girls are reported. When Dandridge confronts Charlie in his own bedroom one night and tries to kill him, Charlie concludes that the monster must be destroyed. But since nobody believes his story he enlists the help of Peter Vincent, the vampire killer from his favorite horror TV show, who is in fact skeptical about vampires existing for real. Written and directed by Tom Holland (Child’s Play), Fright Night fuses teenage angst with bloodsuckers, and a healthy dose of comedy on top of it all.

Last month we celebrated our 4th Anniversary, and once again, want to thank you all for making House of Horrors go four years strong! There’s definitely some pressure starting out our fourth year. We gotta give the crowd something they won’t forget. Well, don’t you worry, friends, we got this one covered.
This one’s been requested throughout the years, and we always listen to what our crowd asks for. So, without further ado, it’s time for Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Walking the fine line between horror and comedy, an alien band of killer clowns descends from the cosmos to harvest scores of small-town victims, cocooning their prey in cotton candy to eat later. With the extraterrestrials disguised as simple circus workers, the authorities don’t suspect a thing. But the joke is on the clowns when two streetwise teens, armed with an ice cream truck, do battle to save their friends.
