June marks a very special month for House of Horrors, it’s our 4-year anniversary! It’s been a super fun 4 years filled with blood, guts, scares, and everything in between. We greatly appreciate your support and enthusiasm all these years, so it’s only right for us to throw a little party… House of Horrors style.
This month we will be showing what very well could go down as the most requested movie at House of Horrors. Anytime we let the crowd pick next month’s title, this usually made it to the final three. When we asked the crowd to fill out surveys of what they want to see at HOH, suggest movies, etc., this always came up. And, hell, Scott’s been pushing this one since the very first HOH. As that cliche saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you, Phantasm!
Two boys who, in pursuit of an odd-looking grave robber, may wind up as the newest members of a freshly dead slave race. Jody and Mike discover that the Tall Man stealing cadavers walks the earth but lives in the afterworld — and that it needs more corpses. Written and directed by Don Coscarelli, this classic from 1979 really needs to be seen to be believed.
Aside from the movie, we will be starting out the night with another riveting round of Horror Movie Pictionary, as demanded by you, the wonderful crowd. We will be giving out free prizes all night, as well. Who knows what else we will have in store for you, the night is definitely going to be another blast so do yourself a favor, and don’t miss it.

Can you believe that we have made it almost four years without showing a single Friday the 13th at House of Horrors?! Yeah, neither can we. It’s time to change that, it’s time to give Camp Crystal Lake some love at House of Horrors.
This film probably needs no description, but what the hell? Twenty years after several mysterious deaths shut it down, Camp Crystal Lake reopens — but the place clearly hasn’t shaken its “death curse,” as a deranged killer terrorizes the teen counselors. There’s a lot of reasons why you should check out House of Horrors, but this month has one main reason: Bacon. That’s right, come see a young Kevin Bacon in one of his earlier roles.

Sadly, it’s that time of year where House of Horrors scales back from two features a night down to one. It’s not because we don’t love you, we do. The fun isn’t ending one bit, we are still going to bring you nights of free horror and so much more. Don’t you worry, friends, we are here for you. To prove it, this month we are going to dive deep into the (strange and twisted) mind of Mr. Clive Barker, with his 1990 feature, Nightbreed.
Based off his novella, Cabal, Nightbreed tells the story of a community of mutant outcasts of varying types and abilities attempts to escape the attentions of a psychotic serial killer and redneck vigilantes with the help of a brooding young man who discovers them. Nightbreed is definitely like no other movie we’ve watched at House of Horrors, and features some amazing looking monsters plus director David Cronenberg stepping in front of the camera to play the demented Dr. Philip K. Decker.

When March rolls around, we know that spring is on it’s way. The winter months get long with all the snow and cold, so the change in the weather is welcomed. Aside from temperatures warming up and the snow start to disappear, the weather can also be a little foggy, a little misty and… Wait a minute! Foggy? Misty? That sounds like a great idea for March’s House of Horrors!
Starting out the night will be John Carpenter’s The Fog,which marks the fourth Carpenter film shown at House of Horrors, but considering his catalog, can you blame us? The Centenary of the small sea town, Antonio Bay, is approaching. While the townsfolk prepare to celebrate, the victims of the crime that founded the town rise from the sea to claim retribution. Under cover of the fog, they carry out their vicious attacks, searching for what is rightly theirs. Featuring a great cast of Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Halbrook, The Fog is a terrific telling of a classic ghost story.
Starting his film career as a co-writer of A Nightmare on Elm St. 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob and The Fly II, Frank Darabont finally directed his first horror feature in 2007 with The Mist, based on the novel by Stephen King. After a violent storm attacks a town in Maine, an approaching cloud of mist appears the next morning. As the mist quickly envelops the area, a group of people get trapped in a local grocery store. The people soon discover that within the mist lives numerous species of horrific, unworldly creatures. As the world around them manifests into a literal hell-on-earth, the horrified citizens try desperately to survive this apocalyptic disaster. We will be showing The Mist in black and white, the way Darabont wanted to release the film but the studios said otherwise.

House of Horrors is all about getting people together to celebrate our love for the horror genre. Over the past three and a half years, we’ve seen so much of what the horror genre has to offer. Part of the fun at House of Horrors is not only viewing the movies we all love, but showing a title or two that perhaps you haven’t seen. This month we are focusing on two titles, we feel, might be under the radar and/or overlooked. Plus,… this is our first haunted house double feature!
Starting out the night will be The Changeling (not the Angelina Jolie flick directed by Clint Eastwood), starring George C. Scott as composer John Russell, who loses his wife and daughter in a car wreck, and seeks solace by renting a secluded estate outside Seattle. But the mansion is haunted by the presence of a child who died there more than 80 years ago. Now, Russell must find out who that child was — and why there seems to be a cover-up about his existence.
Following The Changeling will be The Legend of Hell House, based on the novel by Richard Matheson. A team of four paranormal investigators accepts an invitation for a week’s stay in a mansion rumored to be haunted. Depending on their viewpoints, the group members either intend to prove the presence of ghosts or are determined to debunk the myths. Previous guests of Hell House are known to have gone mad… Will this group survive the week?
On top of the movies, we will be hosting another round of horror movie trivia, so start studying for your chance to win all sorts of goodies!

We felt that it would only be fitting to start out 2011 with a fierce line-up for House of Horrors. Lots of ideas were tossed around, and as we all know, January can be damn cold and since there’s nowhere as cold as outer space, it’s time to go for a journey. For the month of January, House of Horrors will be having it’s first sci-fi horror double feature!
Starting out the night will be Event Horizon. Starring Sam Neil, Laurence Fishbourne, Kathleen Quinian and Sean Pertwee, Event Horizon takes place in the year 2047 when a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long lost starship, Event Horizon. The ship disappeared mysteriously 7 years before on its maiden voyage and with its return comes mystery as the crew of the Lewis and Clark discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying.
January’s main feature is the one and only Alien, Ridley Scott’s masterpiece of sci-fi terror. When a mining ship lands on a planet to investigate upon a suspected SOS, the entire crew are unaware of the terror which they would unleash upon their ship. When an alien life-form attaches itself to the face of a crew member, the rest of the team act fast to try and separate the two organisms. Unbeknown to everyone, this is the start of the terror which would affect every member of the seven person crew.

It’s been somewhat of a tradition for us to show food-related movies for November’s House of Horrors, in honor of that one day. We’re still keeping up with that tradition this year, but also throwing in a little treat. Oh, and double features are back, yes!
There’s a lot of holiday inspired horror movies, but for some reason Thanksgiving has gotten the shaft. There’s been a select few who have tried, even Eli Roth tackled the sub…ject with his faux trailer for Thanksgiving, but last year Kevin Stewart and Jordan Downey released the “ultimate low budget experience”, ThanksKilling. The plot of ThanksKilling is quite simple, a fowl-mouthed homicidal turkey axes off college kids during Thanksgiving break. That’s it. But really, do you need more to a movie when it’s a killer turkey that’s a hand puppet? We think not. Plus, the tagline is “Gobble, Gobble, Motherfucker!” Don’t kid yourself, you’re sold.
For our second feature, we are taking the idea of eating to a different level. Cabin Fever tells the story of five college graduates who rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals. Get it? Flesh-eating virus…eating…Thanksgiving…November… Yeah, we thought it was pretty clever, too. Cabin Fever introduced the horror world to writer/director Eli Roth in 2002, with Peter Jackson saying Cabin Fever is “an unrelenting, gruesomely funny blood bath. I loved it!”

This Saturday we’re going to showcase some outstanding french horror with HIGH TENSION. I haven’t confirmed this with John just yet, but I’m fairly certain this will be presented in it’s original French language format with English subtitles (the way foreign films should be viewed), so get your reading eyes on.
In recent years, France has shown the horror world that they know how to make brutal, yet solid, horror films. Titles like Inside, Frontiers, Sheitan, Them and The Ordeal are proof that there are French filmmakers that we as horror fans need to keep an eye on. Perhaps the front-runner of this French wave of horror is Alexandre Aja’s High Tension, a 2003 release (2005 here in the States). Combining shear tension (hence the title) with extreme violence and gorgeous cinematography, High Tension not only created a name for French horror, but reestablished and defined the modern day slasher film.
Students Marie and Alex have no idea of the horrors that await them when they head off to a remote country home to study for their upcoming exams and a psychopathic stranger attacks turning their quiet getaway into an evening of pure terror.
Originally rated NC-17 in the USA for Strong Graphic Violence, a few graphic shots were cut from the final version of the U.S. release to get it down to the R rating (the original NC-17 cut was released in some theaters). However, the original cut (referred to as an unrated version) is available on DVD. The film finally Rated R for Graphic Bloody Killings, Terror, Sexual Content, and Language.
All of the effects are created by renowned horror make-up artist Giannetto De Rossi, a favorite of late director Lucio Fulci.

The end of the world starts at midnight…not if The Monster Squad has any say in the matter. Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein, the Mummy and Gill Man descend on a tiny town in search of a diabolically powerful amulet. But only 12-year-old Sean and his gang of monster-obsessed misfits can save the day…unless Scary German Guy gets to them first. And if they can find a version. No, that’s virgin. Hopefully they will have better luck than Van Helsing, that idiot blew it. Okay, okay, okay, enough with the movie references.
One could think of The Monster Squad as if the Universal Monsters invaded The Goonies, but regardless of how you want to describe it, one thing holds true: this is one fun movie. Perhaps you saw it when you were younger, not too long ago or never. There’s no better time to (re)discover The Monster Squad then with the House of Horrors gang so mark your calendars!
As always, the movie is free and open to the public. Bring your friends!
We had a terrific turnout for our Three Year Anniversary last month, hell, we almost ran out of seats! It’s so great to see horror fans of all ages, sizes and types get together and celebrate our beloved genre.
This month’s movie probably doesn’t even need a description. One word says it all: Jaws. That’s right, the one and only, Jaws. Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water…
For a little extra fun come just to see John squirm and freak out to the movie that still traumatizes him to this day. As always, the movie is free and open to the public. Bring your friends!
